Florence: Duomo First Entry, Key Holder & Dome Climb

Before you book

  • Meet the Towns of Italy tour leader in front of the Cathedral's main entrance at daybreak; the tour ends back at the Cathedral. A licensed English-speaking guide leads about 30 minutes inside before public opening, as the Key Holder unlocks the doors, and the itinerary gives an hour to the dome. The Baptistery is passed from outside, and the listing names no entry to the Museum or the bell tower.
  • It is a small group, not a private tour, with headsets. Towns of Italy is on the Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore's published 2026 list of authorised partners. The dome climb is a booked slot in the visitor's name, checked against ID, so bring a passport or ID card; the Opera says it offers no queue-jumping service, because booking the slot is what avoids the queue.
  • Children under 7 are not allowed. The climb is 463 steps with no lift, and the Opera strongly discourages it for people with heart conditions, vertigo or claustrophobia and for pregnant women. Bulky backpacks and bags cannot go up. Shoulders and knees must be covered, with no shorts or sleeveless tops. The tour runs in all weather.
  • The dome closes for maintenance from 16 to 20 November 2026. The Opera closes the Cathedral to visitors on Sundays and during religious celebrations, and the listing does not say how a Sunday date runs. Transfers to the meeting point, tips and extras are not included. Cancellation, as listed: “Cancel up to 24 hours in advance for a full refund”.
