Florence Walking Tours: The Streets, or Inside the Museums

Most of the walking tours on this page stay outdoors. The highlights walk on this page includes the guide and the walk, not entry to Brunelleschi's dome, the Accademia or the Uffizi, which in 2026 need their own reservations. Guides work under a national licence, and street groups of more than eight must use headsets.

How the Highlights Walk Works

Four steps, from choosing a starting point to the end of the walk.

  1. Choose a Start and a Language

When you book, pick one of the listing's two starting points and a language: English, French, German, Italian, Russian, Spanish, Armenian or Portuguese. A free luggage deposit is included, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before.

  2. From the Medici Palace to the Duomo

The itinerary starts at Palazzo Medici Riccardi and passes the Basilica of San Lorenzo on the way to the Duomo complex. No entry tickets are included; the Cathedral is free to enter on your own, Monday to Saturday from 10:15 to 15:45, with shoulders and knees covered.

  3. Repubblica, the Signoria and Ponte Vecchio

Then Piazza della Repubblica, Piazza della Signoria, where the David in front of Palazzo Vecchio is a copy (the original left the square in 1873 for the Accademia), and Ponte Vecchio. The six stops are timed at 10 to 20 minutes each, about an hour and forty minutes added together.

  4. Where It Ends, and the Interiors

The finish depends on the starting option you chose. The walk goes ahead rain or shine, so wear comfortable shoes. The interiors are booked separately: in 2026 the Accademia costs €20 plus a €4 booking fee, the Uffizi €25 on the day or €29 in advance, and the dome comes only with a pass or a guided tour, from €30.

Walking Tours, October 2026

What a Florence Walking Tour Covers, and What It Leaves to You

The highlights walk, the tickets you book yourself, the rules guides work under, who the walk suits, how long to allow and five more walks.

Most of the walking tours on this page stay outdoors, and that is the first thing to check before you book one. The historic centre is compact. The walk from Santa Maria Novella station to the Duomo takes about 10 to 12 minutes, and the area UNESCO lists, the city inside the ring of avenues that follows its 14th-century walls plus San Miniato al Monte, covers 532 hectares. A guide can take you past the Duomo, the Signoria and Ponte Vecchio in a couple of hours. Getting inside is a separate matter, and in 2026 it takes reservations that a ticketless walk does not make for you.

The highlights walk

The walk on this page is My Green Tour srl’s highlights walk, from $32 as of October 2026 and rated 4.6 from 6,043 reviews. Its itinerary starts at Palazzo Medici Riccardi and passes the Basilica of San Lorenzo on the way to the Duomo, then goes through Piazza della Repubblica and Piazza della Signoria to Ponte Vecchio. You choose one of two starting points when you book, and guides work in English, French, German, Italian, Russian, Spanish, Armenian and Portuguese. The listing gives no overall length; the six stops on its itinerary are timed at 10 to 20 minutes each, about an hour and forty minutes added together. It runs rain or shine.

The price covers the guide, the walk and a free luggage deposit. No entry tickets are included. The stories, by the listing’s account, are those of the Medici, Dante and Michelangelo. In Piazza della Signoria the David in front of Palazzo Vecchio is a copy: Michelangelo’s statue left the square for good on the night of 31 July 1873 and is now in the Accademia.

What you book yourself

A walk without tickets leaves the interiors to you. These are the 2026 rules for the ones visitors ask about most:

  • The Cathedral is free, Monday to Saturday from 10:15 to 15:45, and closed to visitors on Sundays and during religious celebrations. Shoulders and legs above the knee must be covered, flip-flops are refused, and hats are not allowed inside.
  • Brunelleschi’s dome has no ticket of its own. The climb comes with the Brunelleschi Pass, €30, or with a guided dome tour, and its time slot is named and cannot be changed or refunded. It is 463 steps, with no lift.
  • The Accademia, where the David stands, costs €20 since 1 February 2026, plus a €4 booking fee, and every visitor needs a timed, named reservation. It is closed on Mondays.
  • The Uffizi costs €25 bought on the day or €29 in advance. Every ticket carries the visitor’s name and is checked against ID, and a mismatch means no entry and no refund. It is closed on Mondays too.
  • Palazzo Vecchio’s museum costs €18 and closes at 14:00 on Thursdays.
  • The Loggia dei Lanzi is still free, but since 23 January 2026 you need a free ticket, collected on site.

The Duomo, David and Accademia and Uffizi pages compare the tickets and the guided visits for each.

The rules guides work under

Since Law 190 of 2023 the tourist-guide licence in Italy is national, and every guide must be on the national list. Guiding without being listed is fined €3,000 to €12,000, and an agency or platform that uses an unlisted guide faces €5,000 to €15,000. Guides must also wear their ID badge where you can see it.

Florence adds a street rule, in force since February 2025. No guide may use a voice amplifier, whatever the size of the group, and groups of more than eight people, not counting the guide, must use wireless headsets. Inside the Uffizi the limits are tighter: at most 16 people including the guide, with headsets for groups of more than six. Two of the walks below list a radio or headset system among their inclusions.

Who the walk suits

The highlights walk suits a first morning in the city. It shows you where the sights stand in relation to each other and leaves you to decide which interiors are worth your reservations. It does not suit a trip built around the David or the Uffizi; for that, take the walk with timed entries below, or one of the guided visits on the museum pages. If two hours on foot is too much, the golf cart tours show the city from the river and the hills, though the 2025 rule keeps carts out of its central squares. And if you would rather pay what you think a walk was worth, the free walking tour guide explains how the tip-based tours work.

For a guided first look at the centre, with the museums left for later, this is the walk to book.

How long to allow

A walk on its own takes a morning or an afternoon. With a museum attached, plan the day around the reservation. Tour-Tale gives its Renaissance walk as about 2 hours 15 minutes, and the walk with the Uffizi and the Accademia takes 4 hours by its own listing. If you add the Duomo afterwards, the Opera suggests about 45 minutes for the dome climb and about 90 minutes for its museum.

In July and August the average afternoon high at Florence’s airport weather station is above 32 °C, so book summer walks early or late in the day where you can. The best time to visit Florence goes month by month.

Five more walks

FLORENCE & GLOBAL SMALL GROUP TOURS S.R.L.S’s Uffizi and Accademia walk (from $54, 4.7 from 1,434 reviews) is the one that goes inside. It includes timed entry tickets to both museums, radios and headsets, and groups of 10 to 15, over 4 hours. Because the tickets are named, each traveller’s name is needed as written on their passport or ID. It warns that on the first Sunday of the month, when entry is free and tickets cannot be reserved, entry is not guaranteed, and it does not allow luggage or large bags. The listing we read gives no meeting point, so look for it in your booking confirmation.

Walks In Europe’s Medici tour (from $89, 4.8 from 615) includes pre-booked tickets to the Medici Chapels and Michelangelo’s New Sacristy, then follows the family past Palazzo Medici Riccardi, San Lorenzo and the Duomo to Piazza della Signoria and the Uffizi’s square. It meets in Piazza di Madonna degli Aldobrandini, by the Chapels’ entrance, 15 minutes before the start, and it does not run on the first Sunday of the month; the Chapels themselves close on Mondays. Michelangelo’s Secret Room is not included. It is a separate ticket, €32 with the booking in 2026, for at most four people per slot. The tour is not suitable for wheelchair users.

Tour-Tale’s own free tours are tip-based, but its two walks have a fixed price, from $14 each. The Renaissance and Medici walk (4.8 from 2,103) meets in Piazza di San Lorenzo, takes about 2 hours 15 minutes past the Duomo, the house of Dante and Palazzo Vecchio, and finishes outside the Uffizi. The Dark Mysteries walk (4.6 from 1,389) meets by the statue of General Fanti in Piazza San Marco and ends at Ponte Vecchio. Its subjects are superstition, crime and torture, and the listing rules it out for under-18s and pregnant women. Both walks are in English or Spanish.

StarFlorence’s guided walk (from $26, 4.6 from 1,611) says plainly that it works entirely from outside the attractions. It covers Piazza della Repubblica, the Duomo, the Signoria and Ponte Vecchio, then crosses the river to Palazzo Pitti, with three starting points to choose from and a radio system for hearing the guide. It needs at least two guests to run and depends on the weather; if it is cancelled for either reason, the listing offers another date or a full refund.
